This class covers basic digital camera principles that apply to nearly all digital cameras. We'll start off with an overview of the advantages and disadvantages of shooting in Auto vs. Manual modes. Learn how to have some control when in Auto mode, as well as when it's time to switch to Manual mode. Control your exposures by understanding the relationship between your shutter speed and aperture and how that affects your depth-of-field and the ability to stop motion. We'll talk about ISO, and how it affects your exposure and digital noise in your images, when to use Shooting Modes, how to White Balance and more.

Class Topics

  • Advantages and disadvantages of shooting in Auto vs. Manual modes - how to choose.
  • Exposure - ISO, Shutter Speed and Aperture settings and how they interact with each other.
  • Depth-of-Field - Learn about overall optical principles within camera lenses and how it affects the "mood" of your images.
  • Aperture - See how your F-Stop settings affect your range of focus and your exposure.
  • Shutter - Shutter Speed can mean the difference between a sharp image and a blurry one. Learn what subjects require what shutter speeds and how you can use slower speeds for creativity.
  • Shooting Modes - When you shoot in different lighting conditions, your camera has presets for a really bright scene, nighttime, shade, etc. Learn why these exist and how to best use them to your advantage.
  • White Balance - Auto and Custom White Balance both have advantages in certain conditions. We'll discuss easy ways to white balance before, during and after shooting.
  • Learn how you can avoid flash in some situations and still end up with a nicely exposed, sharp image.
